had some very nice things to say about Democratic AG hopeful
yesterday, saying the state attorney general has become a watchdog of the financial industry, and Coffey would be excellent in the post.
The luncheon at which Franken spoke was closed press, but I had a little help in getting some of Franken’s comments.
“Sean has been a great asset to me in providing advice on the financial reform bill because he has a record of taking on bad actors on Wall Street — and has done so consistently. The NY AG has become a watchdog of the financial industry. The office is vital not just to New York, but to the United States. We don’t know how the financial reform bill will turn out, but I do know that the attorney general in this state will need to step in when regulators fail. We need someone who knows Wall Street, and who has the independence to hold the industry accountable,” an attendee told me Franken said.
“Sean is that person – we need more people like Sean, his integrity and commitment to public service. And I personally just really admire people who serve in the military.
(Coffey is a Navy vet – CK)
. He will be an excellent attorney general, and I’m proud to support him today,” he continued.
The Daily News
that Coffey and his former law firm have made huge donations to pension-pension fund power brokers and netted hundreds of millions of dollars in legal fees.
Coffey, speaking at
featuring the five Democratic AG hopefuls on Monday, decried the amount of money spent on political campaigns as “obscene” — but left out the fact that he has
pledged to plunge $2 million of his own
into his race for the nomination.
Update: A reader sent along a list of donations, apparently culled from the FEC database, of contributions Coffey and his colleagues have made to Franken. Interesting.
