A thug who robbed a gold chain from a fellow criminal has been handed a prison sentence of two years and five months.

Billy Cameron and two others attacked the victim outside the probation service's hostel on Westgate in Wakefield.

Leeds Crown Court heard Cameron punched the victim in the head and threatened to stab him during the incident.

The homeless 21-year-old pleaded guilty to robbery.

Prosecutor Martin Robertshaw said the victim had been living in the hostel since February 21 last year and had bought the chain for £675 on eBay, along with a matching bracelet, in the following days.

He said there had been no trouble until the incident happened as the victim was smoking a cigarette on the evening of March 8 that year.

Cameron and two others approached the victim and Cameron punched him to the left side of the head.

The victim was punched eight times to the left side of the head and twice to the left side of his ribs.

Cameron then grabbed the gold chain from around his neck and demanded to know where the matching bracelet was.

The victim said it was in his room and Cameron responded: "Tell the staff or anyone and I'll stab you."

He suffered swelling to his face, pain to the left side of his head, blurred vision, a chipped tooth and bruises over his rib area.

Cameron was arrested on March 24 that year. In his police interview, he said he was not responsible for the robbery then made no comment.

Clare Walsh, mitigating, said her client had asked not to be released to a hostel so felt like he was set up for failure.
